Emergence in soil - This test gives you an indication of how the seed will perform when planted within a reasonable time frame for that species. The results are used to make decisions on planting an determine your planting rate. The seed is placed under soil in set depths and the rate of emergence is measured as a percentage. Only the seeds that emerge out of the soil are counted. If your seed is ageing the germination may still be good but the vigour will drop and the germination test may not reflect what will come up in the field.
Accelerated Ageing - This test indicates what will happen to the germination after the seed is stored for a period of time. During this test, the seed is exposed to conditions of high humidity and high temperature for short periods of time and then germinated. The results are compared to a control germination to determine how the seeds will tolerate storage conditions. These results can also be used to determine seed vigour - high vigour seed will show small decreases in germination while low vigour seed will show a decrease in germination.
